Went to see Giselle today with Shix.

The ticket was $42.

We sat so close to the front we could hear the dancers breathe. Unbelievable good luck! Great view too.

Still need to pay Shix back for the tickets.

The reason being The Boss went to Thailand with his girlfriend two weeks ago without signing my cheque/s. So basically I haven't been paid for two weeks. The situation is made worse by my dad's absence, him and Maria left for Shanghai a few days before The Boss went on his holiday. Really living the "poverty struggle" life. LOL.

Thanks to Su for shouting me lunch on Saturday, and congratulations on the great new job!

So I borrowed 5 books from UTS library three weeks before my law assignment was due. Was planning to renew it so they are due with the law assignment, but made a mistake renewed them too early.

Procrastinated and didn't hand in my assignment in the earliest possible time (still within the due date though don't worry), and of course, fines accumulated. Marg has never concerned herself with library fines, the use of the book outweighs any issues re money.

The thing is, the double whammie has inflated the fines to more than the expected amount.

If you don't know this, UTS library has a policy whereby any fines incurred during the year that's under $30, will be waived at the end of the year. i.e. You don't have to pay it. But, any fines more than $30 will have to be paid in full.

Margaret's fines, which if
a) the books were renewed on time; and
b) did not procrastinate and instead finished using the books at the earliest law assignment due date;
would be around $25.

But instead, now comes to a sum of $37+, which means, they have to be paid in full before other books can be borrowed for the next exam/assignment from UTS library.

So, one day, Marg logged onto the UTS my library to check how her fines are growing. And, to her dismay, one item which was returned, was not registered as returned and instead is still accumulating fines!

Phone call was made, internet dispute form was submitted and the matter was soon forgotten...

Until today.

This is what the letter from UTS dated 1 May 2006 reads:

I am writing to you following your recent lodging of an request for a review of decision, in which you stated that you returned all the items on the attached list to the Library. However, they remained on your borrowing record.

On investigation, the items were found in teh library.

It is not clearly evident whether the items were returned through the designated return chutes, however any fines incurred on this occasion will be waived. Claims Returned Appeals are recorded by the system for 12 months.

Which means...after taking away the fines incurred for that item, the new amount of fines Marg owes UTS is...

Chanel announced yesterday that they've picked Keira Knightley to be the new face of their Coco Mademoiselle fragrance. Keira will start appearing in ads next year, and is taking over for Kate Moss whose contract expired last October and has been starring in their ads since 2002. Keira said in a statement:

"[I'm] really proud to have been asked to work with such an iconic house as Chanel, and thrilled to follow the extraordinary women who have been associated with it before."

I'm hoping Keira follows in Kate Moss' footsteps and turns to a life of cocaine addiciton. I've always been curious as to what cocaine can do to a girl who looks like she already uses cocaine. Came home around 2pm and slept(!) until 7pm. Feel like sleeping now and it's only 8.20pm. I think it's because I was doing/finishing the law assignment, which thank GOOOOOOOOD I handed in yesterday. My one week of delaying that means I have one week less of doing the Accounting report, which is due next week.

Hate uni. Have to work tomorrow, Thursday and Friday. My new shoes hurt my left feet. Feeling tired.

Did nothing last week. Had my accg class test on Tuesday just then, surprisingly it looks better than the last one (which I got 2 marks!), but you never know until you get the marks back (maybe another 2 marks).

Working 8.30 to 6 is exhausting.

The Sunday that just passed, I spent it lying on my bed, eating junk food (twisties, yoghurt, chips, chocolate ice-cream, fucking even rice bubbles) and watching horror movies from compressed DVDs on my new DVD player, consecutively, 10 hours straight.

It was the first time that I spent the day in bed when I'm not sick. Better not let it become a habit.

Behind on law readings, so took my text to and from work to read on the train. Good progress to work, no progress from work, since afterwork it's impossible to get a seat on the train from central. If I really wanted to read on the way back I'll have to think of a way to grab the poles with my foot considering my left hand got the text and my right hand is waving the highlighter. Impossible! *Huff*

Sick sick sick of fruit and yoghurt in the mornings. Starting to try ham and cheese croissant, toasted. Does taste nice. Joseph has stopped giving me funny looks when I ask for milk. Perhaps the only person in the morning rush-hour crowd who isn't ordering coffee of some sort.

Many thanks to Ah Ka, who kindly drove me to and from uni.

Lacking sleep like everyone else, very very pimply skin considering haven't gone to facial place for 3 weeks, must go next weekend after easter break (the holiday which I'm relying on to do my law assignment which is due straight after).

Haven't seen Su for 3 weeks. Haven't talked to her for 3 weeks, so on the 25th finally decided to meet up for a movie.

Turned out, we skipped the movie, and talked; from 8.15pm until 1am. So much things are happening, we giggled, laughed, and generally had a good time.

I wonder what Jenny has been doing, I wonder what Jason's car looks like, I wonder whether Helen have bought any new accessories/bags/shoes/magazines, I wonder if Shix have managed to finish her essay on her visit to BeiJing, I wonder when will be the next time I'll see Jeff, I wonder how are Renita and Scott doing, and how's my baby Blaise, whether he's graduated. I wonder if I'll see KaTuna tomorrow.

Paid $50 for a ULA card, which allows me to borrow books from libriaries of basically all major universities in Sydney for the period of one year.

Finally got it done after the weekend ordeal of borrowing Jeff's library card. Was a big hassle considering both of us are so busy these days and rarely gets to see each other, so got my own card now. Makes life easier.

Seriously lacking sleep. Miss everyone.

1) Hey I got a raise! Perhaps it's got something to do with me now working officially 8.30am to 6pm, or the amount of alcohol my boss drank at the farewell dinner, but I was promised last Friday night for a raise and I got it! YAY! Didn't want to mention it incase he tried to wiggle out of his words and I'd be left with a massive loss of expectations.

2) As some of you know, my VCR has been broke since January. I cannot tape any shows and it's bloody frustrating. So after work today, I went to the Good Guys at Rockdale, and bought myself the LG VCR DVD Combo for $175 + $29 Extended 2 year warranty. Then you'll see this girl carrying a massive box walking 5 blocks back to Rockdale station, who tried to catch a cab at Kogarah station but there were none and there were a line waiting, who ended up carrying the bloody package by foot to home. I've still got the red marks on my inner elbow from carrying it. So stupid. Good exercise.

Ai...

So busy these days. I'd get home from uni or from Work at 7pm (the earliest time I get home these days) and I'd do frikin homework until 12 mid night. The last time I saw a movie was three weeks ago when uni just started. Very stressed out.

Was driving for 2 hours (6pm-8pm) until nearly crashed into an Asian old lady. Got confused and lost whilst turning in one of Rockdale's thousands of round-abouts, did a girly scream and let go (that's both hands) off the steering wheel and left the instructor to hold it for his dear life.

I think I should stick with driving in a straight line for the time being.

I ate something that ate my stomach

and now it's eating me.

Had virtually no sleep last night. Stomach playing up from the dumplings next door gave us. Self made, I think they were too tough. Not that I ate much, but man did I get it bad during the night.

Woke up next morning with stomach ache, body ache and a serious lack of sleep. Still, determined to go to work, I headed off to the station against the pouring rain.

Thought I could at least sit down on the train to central...f*cking state rail train cancelled my slow train, so had to stand up squashed against the door on the fast train. Stomach churning the whole way, a few times I just wanted to let go and throw up on everyone. That way at least I'll clear some space around me and give myself breathing space.

Finally got to Central station. No way I could make it to work. Almost threw up. Called the Boss and exchanged work for tomorrow.

Took next train back and crawled my way home.

Had some warm milk and tried to catch up on some sleep. Woke up 2 hours later and worse body ache.

Bank guard opens fire on queue jumper

A stressed-out security guard opened fire on a woman who jumped the queue at a branch of Thailand's largest bank, police said today.

The 33-year-old guard was charged with attempted murder for shooting a university student after a quarrel that erupted when a queue-ticketing machine broke down.

A Bangkok Bank employee was also injured when a second bullet ricocheted and hit her left leg, a police captain said.

The guard, Thong-arn Nalard, quarrelled with the woman after telling her to get in the queue with other customers.

He said she hit him in the back after he accidentally brushed her arm, escalating the dispute. Then he opened fire.

"After interrogating the witnesses and the suspect, and based on his work track record, we believe that he was under stress," the captain said.

The victims' lives are not in danger.

He's been to the gym, looks buff and stylish, and now Barbie's boy toy Ken wants to win back the doll he split from two years ago.

After a two-year separation, Mattel said today that Barbie's long-time suitor wants to rekindle his decades-long romance with his plastic paramour and get her to give Aussie surfer Blaine the flick.

Mattel is hoping Ken's return to retail stores can also revitalise the company's overall fortunes. In January, the company blamed sagging Barbie sales for sagging profits.

"Ken has revamped his life -- mind, body and soul," Hollywood stylist and Mattel consultant Phillip Bloch said in a statement. "Everyone knows how difficult it is to change, especially when you've lived your life a certain way for more than four decades."

Mattel said in February 2004 that Barbie and Ken had split after 43 years because they wanted to spend some time apart.

Ken, who appears to have spent time in the gym and at the stylist, returns wearing a beach-wear ensemble complete with board shorts and white T-shirt.

For her part, Barbie publicist Lauren Dougherty said Barbie "appreciates the new look Ken is sporting. He really looks great. But we'll have to stay tuned to see whether these two will get back together."

Anyway completely forgot my art class until Jason reminded me. Had a very bad week, extremely stressed on Thursday and Friday, it's like everyone had something that needed to go out in the avo, only they give you the work at 17.05 when you're off work.

Did get one piece of very useful info though, working as a paralegal for a couple of years was how Antony (Partner of our firm) was exempted from studying at College of Law, provided certain criterias are met.

Our Russian receptionist Anna, who finished 14 subjects in TAFE within 6 months instead of the designated 2 years, have been accepted by UWS in their combined law degree. So this semester she's going to do 4 subjects and working 5 days a week.

Sorry, got sidetracked. I'm so confused about my life right now. I wish I have graduated. The latest thoughts circles around sticking with 3 subjects next semester instead of part-timing. Uni should be priority in my life since I'm only doing a f*cking bachelor degree and it's taking so long. Following this, if I'm not going to increase my work hours, I might as increase my uni hours and try to graduate sooner.

New Life Goal:
Get back to full-time studying ASAP and work 3 days a week.

Just dished out $700 for driving lessons, after the art-class, the facial pay up-front my bank balance, as of 10 February 2006 at 21.30 is indicating:

I don't even want to think about anything else.

I woke up, I fell back into bed, I got up with no plan, no obligation, no need to get up.

Once in a while, you'd come across a book. A brilliantly written books, its plot and characters utterly absorbing. It brightens your day, because it's something you look forward to doing, but by doing so, you know, the story always finishes too soon. Two day it took, for me to finish Donna Tartt's Secret History. Oh but I haven't read a book so interesting since Mid Night in the Garden of Good and Evil. For two days I've been bewildered by Francis, astounded by Henry, and marking the chilling similarities between the aloof and observant hero, and myself. But by no means do I wish to recommend the book, for this is merely an acknowledgement that it's a book which I would not give away nor sell, perhaps in my life. Tartt is incredible at drawing detailed imagery of everything in the book, the story being wicked yet at moments you'd burst out laughing at the oddest things. I was so mesmerised by the style I went to the city yesterday solely for the purpose of purchasing the only other book Tartt has written.

Was watching Oprah: Brokeback Mountain segment. Went to check Oscar nominees list and is now fantastically happy Jake Gyllenhaal has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Also heard Brokeback Mountain has been nicked Bareback Mountain...

I can't believe it.

I've been hyping over it for the past half year, now that I've seen it, I don't even have much to say about it.

The scenery was beautiful, so was the simple guitar tunes that accompanied the entire movie. Heath Ledger's Ennis was surprisingly not as convincing as Jake Gyllenhal's Jack, the latter much more involving both in facial expression and speech, why Jake wasn't nominated for Golden Globes is beyond me.

The movie was beautiful, yet during the times when camera followed Ennis and Jakes' lives when they were with their wives, the audience couldn't help feeling a sense of relief. The two main characters look bloody happier when they were married with children, than with each other. The climax was the only memorable part of the film, but it comes in at the last 5 minutes of the 2 hour long film, which for someone who've read the book (i.e. Me), seems way to late to save a beautifully directed film that failed to be as emotionally involving nor as powerful as the original book.

I arrived at the Office around 8.30am.

The status conference at District Court (DC) was at 9.30am, so I was expecting to be briefed beforehand. Steve was not in.

At 9am he saunders into the office, he apparantly slept through the alarm, leaving his 8.45am appointment sitting at reception.

I didn't get briefed.

Checked the court list online and the conference was re-scheduled to 2pm, in front of Registrar M (Name withheld because I know the bitch would sue if she ever found out) . Goodie and Fuck, respectively. I'd get time to do errands, then RM would shoot me in the head and knock me down. Will get in more details about the notorious RM later.

So I went to the Licencing Court to file affadavit, got a phone call from Mark saying that he forgot to attach some documents so the affadavit would have to wait. If he had told me earlier I would've been able to take a train directly to DC to do other stuff.

I did some filing at DC, and photocopied some documents. Then realised the documents I photocopied were not mine, then had to recopy them. Thank god it didn't cost much for the useless pile.

I went to the Workers Compensation Commission (WCC) at Museum to do the 7 access orders which I did not end up doing yesterday. There were still so many people waiting for the copier, so I left.

Went to Wynyard to pick up a transfer from Cth Bank, then went back to WCC. I waited 40 min, but fortunately had a good book with me.

By the time I got back to the office it was around 1pm. Steve told me to call him, and then left with Antony for a "meeting", I was still not briefed. I look like dead meat...

I got sooo whacked by Registrar Bitch M it's not funny.

Fuck she's a nasty piece of work. Gave me shit for everything I said, the guy whose matter was listed before mine copped it really bad from her as well. It's like she'd just go out of her way to ruin people's day. I've had her so far and including today, a total of 3 times, and each time she'd give me shit. Something's permanently stuck up her arse that she just can't get over. Maybe she needs to go out and get some... The point is it's unbelievable anyone can be so bloody uptight, the only time she smiled was when she dumped the costs on me for the hearing today.

Steve wouldn't find it very funny when he sees the orders. But he and Antony never came back from the "lunch" meeting. Have fun guys, I'll be hanging here all night in the wind. Cheers.

There are alot of things which I wanted to blog when I was in Shanghai. But I guess when the trip is over, it's hard to remember what it was like again. OK I admit I have a terrible memory and am too lazy to recall everything. Stupid blogspot which I couldn't access in Shanghai! HUM.

Anyway heaps of things happened after I went back to work this Monday. Antony and Evelina are now partners of the firm, Dong became a senior associate, Steve's laptop got stolen, me and Antony are moving to the independent old office and I'll end up with an office of my own...*sigh*

Carnesha the receptionist is gone, we now have Anna and Russian girl.

I have finally visited the Chinese medicine shop near Kogarah station. Been advised to drink Chrysanthemum tea, yay my favourite flower is edible too.

Uni barred me from enrolling online because apparently I still had $8 library fine from last year which I haven't paid. So on Tuesday Jenny accompanied me to uni (love ya gal)and got that sorted. Uni is a pain in the ARSE, but check this out:

Late last year the Federal Government passed new laws about the compulsory student activity fees that had previously been charged each semester by all Australian universities. At Macquarie University, these fees were called Student Activity Fees, and included payments for a range of services provided by Macquarie University Sport and Recreation (MUSR), Students at Macquarie (SAM) and other bodies that represent students on campus.

The legislation - called The Higher Education Support Act (Abolition of Compulsory Up-front Student Union Fees) Bill 2005 - effectively abolished student activity fees for periods of study starting on or after 1 July 2006.

What this means at Macquarie is that students must pay their Student Activities Fees for first semester 2006 as usual in order to enrol. Students who do not pay the Fees by the due date will have their first half-year enrolment cancelled. Students will not be required to pay student activity fees from second semester 2006 onward. While the laws allow universities to charge students doing a full-year unit in 2006 a whole year’s Student Activity Fees, Macquarie has decided that, in the interests of equity, the University will only require payment of Student Activity Fees for the first semester part of the full-year unit.

The legislation entitles students to voluntarily become members of SAM, MUSR, the Students Council or Postgraduate Representative Association after 1 July, and advice will be provided later in the year on how to do this.

The Exam

Procrastinated until the last minute for Property Exam. Started reading the textbook the day before my final.

Bombed spectacularly for the first question, wrote what I know for the second, and underwrote/did not answer the third question.

I did not expect them to ask us to analyse the movement of the trust mechanism from moralistic relations, through individual property notions to capital investments, so sat there first half an hour panicking and watching everyone else write.

Had two hours sleep before the exam. Just glad it's over and done with so I can go home and sleep. Thank Cynthia for the lunch.

Work

Both Kate (Conveyancing) and Carnesha (Reception) have resigned for separate reasons. Considering our office only had 7 people in total, it now comes to 5. The previous paralegal was "let go" because she took a sick day. My job may be hanging in limbo. Stressed and unhappy and it's all showing on my face. (Literally).

Other

For those who are not aware I'll be going overseas from 24 November til 30 December. I'll be in Shanghai visiting my mom. Most likely when I come back, I've gained another 10kg considering it's winter over there now. There are movies I want to see here before I go but have not yet been released. Tough I guess. Turning 21 on the 29th of this month, the only benefit I can see is that I'll finally be able to sponcor a child. Hunger and malnutrition are killing nearly six million children a year, the price of a life at $40 a month is too low for my to say "I can't afford to".

1) Brokeback Mountain - I read the book last year and I cried. Then I forgot it until yesterday, when i saw on the paper that the movie is going to be released on 10 November 2005. I watched the trailor today and I had tears in my eyes. I'm so gonna cry when I go and see it. *Mental note: Must prepare tissue beforehand.* Oh man, it's gonna be good. ~Must get DVD! Must get DVD!~

2) Wu Ji - Another film that's taken ages to release. Wonder if this is going to be as big as Hero was, or as hyped.

3) Grimm Brothers - Damn it, I've read the bloody review like two months ago, and still have no clue the release date. Another film with Heath Ledger in it, by accident not choice I assure you.

When I got home last night it was 11pm. Dragged home a bag of books, half of what I grabbed, considering I had to sit down and read through them before borrowing the relevant ones. I know, I know, the essay isn't due until later, but for a change this time I want to be one of those people who others hate because they've hogged all the useful books.

Got up 6.30 this morning and went to my four hour tut, which convinced me to attack the essay question with more passion and determination - I recon my tutor, Dr Liza Rybak who's a very scary/experienced/tough Doctor in Law, who's also worked in Administrative Review Tribunal for five years, and has been a barrister for 20 years around the world, was born for this seminar like verbal pumping of the mind, because after the tut I ran to the library and borrowed another 5 books. Considering I was already carrying my text and my novel, my bag weighed the equivalent of...well...7 books.

Macquarie has this stupid policy that undergraduates are only allowed to borrow 10 books at a time. I'd hate to find out other people put a hold on my books, which means I'd be unable to renew them...HUM!

Anyway, so I had an armful of books, and I was at the borrowing counter...

Schedule for this week has spun out of control as of last night with the stupid extremely difficult insurmountable tedious grotesque Only-from-Macq-Uni-Lecturer-the-Twisted-Bastard administrative law assignment.

I'd have to get to uni tonight after work in order to get some books. They'd be gone tomorrow as law tuts and lectures would be on and heaps of people would rush to the library. Sh*t thing is I have still got two presentations at my two tuts tomorrow.

Emily Rose: The Real Story of Anneliese Michel's Exorcism

From her birth on the 21st of September, 1952, Anneliese Michel enjoyed the life of a normal, religiously nurtured young girl. Without warning, her life changed on a day in 1968 when she began shaking and found she was unable to control her body. She could not call out for her parents, Josef and Anna, or any of her 3 sisters. A neurologist at the Psychiatric Clinic Wurzburg diagnosed her with "Grand Mal" epilepsy. Because of the strength of the epileptic fits, and the severity of the depression that followed, Anneliese was admitted for treatment at the hospital.

Soon after the attacks began, Anneliese started seeing devilish grimaces during her daily praying. It was the fall of 1970, and while the young people of the world were enjoying the liberal freedoms of the time, Anneliese was battling with the belief that she was possessed. It seemed there was no other explanation for the appearance of devilish visions during her prayers. Voices also began following her, saying Anneliese will "stew in hell". She mentioned the "demons" to the doctors only once, explaining that they have started to give her orders. The doctors seem unable to help, and Anneliese lost hope that medicine was going to be able to cure her.

In the summer of 1973, her parents visited different pastors to request an exorcism. Their requests were rejected and they were given recommendations that the now 20 year old Anneliese should continue with medication and treatment. It was explained that the process by which the Church proves a possession (Infestatio) is strictly defined, and until all the criterion is met, a Bishop can not approve an exorcism. The requirements, to name a few, include an aversion to religious objects, speaking in a language the person has never learned, and supernatural powers.

In 1974, after supervising Anneliese for some time, Pastor Ernst Alt requested a permit to perform the exorcism from the Bishop of Wurzburg. The request was rejected, and a recommendation soon followed saying that Anneliese should live even more of a religious lifestyle in order to find peace. The attacks did not diminish, and her behavior become more erratic. At her parents' house in Klingenberg, she insulted, beat, and began biting the other members of her family. She refused to eat because the demons would not allow it. Anneliese slept on the stone floor, ate spiders, flies, and coal, and even began drinking her own urine. She could be heard screaming throughout the house for hours while breaking crucifixes, destroying paintings of Jesus, and pulling apart rosaries. Anneliese began committing acts of self-mutilation at this time, and the act of tearing off her clothes and urinating on the floor became commonplace.

After making an exact verification of the possession in September 1975, the Bishop of Wurzburg, Josef Stangl, assigned Father Arnold Renz and Pastor Ernst Alt with the order to perform "The Great Exorcism" on Anneliese Michel. The basis for this ritual was the "Rituale Romanum", which was still, at the time, a valid Cannon Law from the 17th century. It was determined that Anneliese must be saved from the possession by several demons, including Lucifer, Judas Iscariot, Nero, Cain, Hitler, and Fleischmann, a disgraced Frankish Priest from the 16th century, and some other damned souls which had manifested through her. From September '75 until July '76, one or two exorcism sessions were held each week. Anneliese's attacks were sometimes so strong that she would have to be held down by 3 men, or even chained up. During this time, Anneliese found her life somewhat return to normal as she could again go to school, take final examinations at the Pedagogic Academy in Wurzburg, and go to church.

The attacks, however, did not stop. In fact, she would more often find herself paralyzed and falling unconscious than before. The exorcism continued over many months, always with the same prayers and incantations. Sometimes family members and visitors, like one married couple that claims to have "discovered" Anneliese, would be present during the rituals. For several weeks, Anneliese denied all food. Her knees ruptured due to the 600 genuflections she performed obsessively during the daily exorcism. Over 40 audio tapes record the process, in order to preserve the details.

The last day of the Exorcism Rite was on June 30th, 1976, and Anneliese was suffering at this point from Pneumonia. She was also totally emaciated, and running a high fever. Exhausted and unable to physically perform the genuflections herself, her parents stood in and helped carry her through the motions. "Beg for Absolution" is the last statement Anneliese made to the exorcists. To her mother, she said, "Mother, I'm afraid." Anna Michel recorded the death of her daughter on the following day, July 1st, 1976, and at noon, Pastor Ernst Alt informed the authorities in Aschaffenburg. The senior prosecutor began investigating immediately.

A short time before these final events unfolded, William Friedkin's "The Exorcist" (1974) came to the cinemas in Germany, bringing with it a wave of paranormal hysteria that flooded the nation. Psychiatrists all over Europe reported an increase of obsessive ideas among their patients. Prosecutors took more than 2 years to to take Annaliese's case to court, using that time to sort through the bizarre facts. Anneliese's parents and the two exorcists were accused of negligent homocide. The "Klingenberg Case" would be decided upon two questions: What caused the death of Anneliese Michel, and who was responsible?

According the forensic evidence, "Anneliese starved to death". Specialists claimed that if the accused would have begun with forced feeding one week before her death, Anneliese's life would have been saved. One sister told the court that Anneliese did not want to go to a mental home where she would be sedated and forced to eat. The exorcists tried to prove the presence of the demons, playing taped recordings of strange dialogues like that of two demons arguing about which one of them would have to leave Anneliese's body first. One of the demons called himself Hitler, and spoke with a Frankish accent (Hitler was born in Austria). Not one of those present during the exorcism ever had a doubt about the authenticity of the presence of these demons.

The psychiatrists, whom had been ordered to testify by the court, spoke about the "Doctrinaire Induction". They said that the priests had provided Anneliese with the contents of her psychotic behavior. Consequentially, they claimed, she later accepted her behavior as a form of demonic possession. They also offered that Anneliese's unsettled sexual development, along with her diagnosed Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, had influenced the psychosis.

The verdict was considered by many as not as harsh as they expected. Anneliese's parents, as well as the exorcists, were found guilty of manslaughter resulting from negligence and omitting first aid. They were sentenced to 6 months in jail and probation. The verdict included the opinion of the court that the accused should have helped by taking care of the medical treatment that the girl needed, but instead, their use of naive practices aggrivated Anneliese's already poor constitution.

A commission of the German Bishop-Conference later declared that Anneliese Michel was not possessed, however, this did not keep believers from supporting her struggles, and it was because so many believed in her that Anneliese's body did not find peace with death. Her corpse was exhumed eleven and a half years after her burial, only to confirm that it had decayed as would have been expected under normal circumstances. Today, her grave remains a place of pilgrimage for rosary-praying and for those who believe that Anneliese Michel bravely fought the devil.

In 1999, Cardinal Medina Estevez presented journalists in Vatican-City the new version of the "Rituale Romanum" that has been used by the Catholic Church since 1614. The updates came after more than 10 years of editing and is called "De exorcismis et supplicationibus quibusdam" otherwise known as "The exorcism for the upcoming millennium". The Pope approbated the new Exorcism Rite, which is now allowed for worldwide use. This new form of exorcism came after the German Bishop-Conference demanded to ultimately abolish the "Rituale Romun". It also came more than 20 years after Anneliese Michel had died.

Never been big on birthday celebrations. Last year Shix pulled my birthday dinner together at the last minute (love you girl and thank everyone for turning up).

The plan is, there is no plan. There will be no birthday dinner, no gathering, no tea party, no clubbing. The reasons being firstly no one can do November celebrations because everyone is in Exams, and secondly, I can't do October because I can't bloody afford it.

My ING statement came in yesterday. Total deposit since I started the account was $1,000.00. Total withdraw is $950.00. I rest my point.

But I will be back a few days before the new year. And I will be prepared for Jeff's and Su's birthdays. Hopefully I'll see everyone then.

Partly because there's nothing good, partly because I discovered what I usually enjoyed once per week could be downloaded by seasons at a time.

So I was pleasantly shocked, when I turned on my tv, and Closer was on channel 10.

Best drama I've seen for a long time. The main character, kicks ass.

Interesting.

Had a google, the film Wolf Creek is an Australian film of two British backpackers lost in WA, and when offered assitance from a stranger, took it. Sounds familiar?

It's been dubbed one of the most terrifying film of the year, better than "Saw" and a must see for horror movie fans.

Very interesting.

I'll tell you tomorrow if it's all hype and no substance after I've seen it.

The Book update

Ever since I started working more, I'd always carry a book in my bag. Not the textbook, but a novel that I can read on the train. The pain of uni, is not only the workload, but the effect of that on my reading.

I love to read. I read alot. Very fast.

Although now the only time I do have is on the train to and from work/uni, and normally only a few pages at a time can be read, but it's still so much better than in first and second year when I just didn't have ANY time to read fictional novels.

I'm grateful for how everything is the way it is now.

When I was in Angus and Robertson the other day, looking for things to read, guess what I saw on the shelf that "just" came out and made my heart jump...

The Glasses

I'm going blind. Albeit slowly. More precisely -0.50 at a time.

My existing lenses is too weak for my eyes to see. I do not have a spare pair of spectacles. So, after much blurred vision for a week, I was planning to get new lenses fitted the past Tuesday. Of coz, I was sick at home. The blurriness became so bad that I just had to do something.

So after work, I made a dash to the optometrist, my only one on Sussex street, and there it happened...

The New Phone

I was rushing to the Optometrist...and there was the 3 shop on Goulburn street.

Helen would know. I've been intending to change my phone plans ever since July, but was told that I was unable to do it. I wanted to change the existing $33 plan, which I exceeded regularly ever since I started part-timing uni and is becoming too expensive to bear, to the $29 cap.

So I walked into the shop to change my plan.

And walked out with a brand new Sony-Ericson Z800i.

Um....Uh....Mm....

Well at least I've got the $29 cap...*sheepish grin*

Women are bigger, and consumerism has to wear a lot of the blame, writes Paul Sheehan.

Australia is suffering from Fat Chick Syndrome. In totality, women in this country have been adding an extra kilogram every couple of years for a long time. The majority are now either overweight, fat, obese, or are worried about crossing the border from fab to flab.

Is this what they call affluenza? According to the American TV documentary of the same name, affluenza means: "(1) The bloated, sluggish and unfulfilled feeling that results from efforts to keep up with the Joneses. (2) An epidemic of stress, overwork, waste and indebtedness caused by dogged pursuit of the consumer's dream. (3) An unsustainable addiction to economic growth."

A major byproduct of wealth and consumerism is Fat Chick Syndrome. It falls, most heavily and most cruelly, on the young. Just when women should be enjoying the immortality of youth, when they are at their prettiest, healthiest, most robust and most free, they are also at their most stressed. Stress and weight tend to go together.

Ten years ago, the typical Australian woman in her mid-20s weighed, on average, 62.6 kilograms. Two years ago ... pause for effect ... she weighed 67.4 kilograms. That's about an 8 per cent increase.

The trend has been also upwards, though not quite so much, for older women. When it comes to weight, the burden of anxiety falls far more oppressively on women than men. They tend to fret, fidget and obsess about saddle-bags, cellulite, saggy arms, puffy necks, disappearing waists and anything else that can thicken, crease, sink or bloat.

They must now also carry the burden of a massive, 20-year study of 40,000 women, known as the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health. The study's co-ordinator, Christina Lee, has described the overall result of the study so far as "astounding". She was not being kind. She started talking about heart disease and diabetes. The findings open with the brutal statement: "Levels of obesity among women have doubled in the last 15 years."

When the results of the first 10 years of the study were released on September 14, they caused a splash, then sank like a stone. The ramifications of the study may not yet have been absorbed into the brain cells of the national psyche. You may ask, what about a nation of fat blokes, given that affluenza is gender-neutral and Australia is a nation where, when it comes to robust aerobic activity, most men prefer to watch it on TV. It's called footy. As the stern language of the study stated: "Current estimates suggest that 2.4 million Australian adults are obese and a further 4.9 million are overweight ..." That's half the adult population, men and women.

But there is also another burden that women carry more than men, which again falls disproportionately on the young - the unspeakable cruelty of women's magazines. The ideal woman presented by the fashion industry and its cruel handmaidens at the women's magazines is an impossible ideal built around a subspecies of very young, very tall, very thin, long-necked, long-legged, narrow-hipped models - giraffe chic - that is at odds with the body shapes and body possibilities of, say, 98 per cent of women.

Not that fashion and fashionistas are evil. It's just that fashion magazines tend to be giraffic and corrupt. Seriousness about appearance is not superficial, it can be much deeper - and transformative. I happen to be addicted to a unique fashion show, What Not To Wear which, beneath the caustic comments the two caustic English presenters, Trinny and Susannah, is a decent, honest, insightful and liberating program.

What Not To Wear is big in Britain but in Australia it inhabits the twilight zone of endless reruns and recycling known as cable TV, the sheltered workshop monopoly of Foxtel. But if you've got 50 channels the law of averages says lightning has to strike somewhere and I've found lightning with Trinny Woodall and Susannah Constantine on the Lifetime Channel. I've even bought their new book, Trinny and Susannah - What You Wear Can Change Your Life.

That's true. They prove it every show, taking fashion disasters and breaking them down, then repackaging, enhancing and exhorting their subjects. These women are not giraffe-chic. They embody the phobias of modern women. This is Susannah's description of her flaws in their new book: "Oh my God! The breasts have engorged to an E cup, the stomach has emerged like a hernia, open and laid out for inspection above every waistband, and the arms, well, they are worryingly vast and soon to take over my entire body. This may sound like an exaggeration, but it's how I feel about the parts I don't like."

While these self-insults are somewhat accurate, these are two blue-chip sparklers, superbly packaged most of the time. They also offer hope and purpose, which is the point here. The statistics say women are getting thicker. However, they are also getting taller, which must account for some weight gain. And the measure of overweight used in the longitudinal study - the Body Mass Index - is utterly unforgiving. So the percentage of women living with a healthy weight is higher than the figures indicate. And there is a marked link between intelligence and weight.

Thank you Jenny, Katrina and Blaise for their encouraging comments! I've been back to work today *and secretly tried really hard to pass onto someone else...except everyone at work is already sick from the flu...*

Anyway here's my sick schedule:

Wednesday: Sore throat
Thursday: Sore throat and coughing
Friday: Non-stop coughing and running nose, watery eyes
Saturday: Slight clearing of runny nose, but cough worsened
Sunday: No more runny nose, but persisting cough

And just as I thought my flu is clearing today...

My period came.

F*ck.

The sore throat became a full flu.

Not at work today, at home, eating fruits, medicine, drinking coughing sirup and sitting in the sun reading in vain hope of killing bacteria or getting a tan in the process.

But with the runny nose, teary eyes and my lungs trying to jump out of my throat every 2nd minute, I'd rather be at work.

Gatherings of North Shore mothers lately abound with tales of private school girls who perform oral sex on boys as readily as the previous generation used to "pash".

Girls as young as 13 are reduced to man-eater Paris Hilton as their role-model, eschewing a couple of generations of feminist achievement for the art of playing dumb.

Once it was fathers who had to lock up their daughters. But these days mothers worry about protecting their sons from sassy Amazons in "Gosford" skirts who SMS with offers of threesomes.

"Women propose to men, women proposition men, have one-night stands with men," Rebecca Huntley, author of a coming book on Generation Y, The World According To Y, has said. "But for men it's all about what they can't do and they are scared of that."

Scared maybe, but evidence is mounting of a frightening backlash from men, with an increase in reported sexual assaults, including allegations against high-profile sportsmen, and a reported rise in workplace sexual harassment.

For growing numbers of women the solution is to drop out of a hostile dating scene chronicled in Sky newsreader Jacinta Tynan's new book Good Man Hunting. They would rather be "Quirky Alones" and retain their dignity.

But if finding a husband in Sydney is an ordeal for single 30-something women from Paddington such as Tynan, men, it seems, are just as disillusioned with the opposite sex.

"My single male friends have dumped [George Street bar] the Establishment and the nightclub scene and are seriously thinking about trying to meet girls at Hillsong," says Rodney, young bachelor around town, only half tongue-in-cheek.

Some men complain post-feminist women are too aggressive and predatory, care little about their feelings and treat them like sperm donors once they (the women) hit 30.

Others gorge themselves on the sexual smorgasbord on offer, but gain little emotional fulfilment. Their open disregard for the fairer sex is startling.

The misogyny of rapper Eminem is well-known: "Put anthrax on a Tampax and slap you till you can't stand." He defines a popular culture in which women are attracted to men who don't respect women.

But even innocuous movie comedies of the moment such as Wedding Crashers and The 40 Year Old Virgin document a growing disconnection between men and women.

The latest oeuvre of the backlash is New York writer Neil Strauss's book The Game: Penetrating The Secret Society Of Pickup Artists.

It boils down to a cold-blooded guide for lovelorn men on how to "game" women, exploit their insecurities and trick them into sex. If looking for Mr Right means women discard less desirable men along the way, this is Mr Wrong fighting back.

One of Strauss's techniques is the "neg" in which the man hides a casual insult in what appears to be a compliment. "Your nails look nice, are they real?"; "I like your skirt. I just saw another girl wearing the same one a moment ago."

Another strategy is to show interest in a woman and suddenly turn your back on her and talk to another woman. Another is to practise repeated rejection on a woman until you break her spirit. Respect and honesty are nowhere.

Strauss, a self-confessed nerd in his early 30s, who reportedly has had his teeth capped, Lasik eye surgery in order to ditch the specs and shaved his head to hide the bald spots, and wears fake tan and elevator shoes, offers himself as the master seducer.

He claims to have slept with hundreds of women just by applying manipulative psychological techniques to the seduction game. Now he is imparting his "pickup artist" formula to any man who nature meant to be unlucky in love. It is every woman's nightmare.
